ABOUT TREBINJE

Trebinje is the second largest city in Herzegovina, located in the extreme south of BiH, with less than 40,000 inhabitants. It is located on the Trebišnjici at the edge of Trebinje field below Leotar mountains, at an altitude of 270 meters.

Trebinje is said that the city of the sun and the plane. Today it is considered one the most beautiful cities in Bosnia and Herzegovina.

Traffic, Trebinje is well connected with the cities in the vicinity (30 km Dubrovnik, Mostar 120 km, 70 km Nikšić, Herceg Novi 40 km). The advantage of Trebinje is close to the airport 4: Èilipi (40 km), Tivat (65 km) Mostar (115 km) and Podgorica (130 km).

Trebinje is first mentioned in the tenth century by Constantine Porphyrogenitus called Tribunia, which was later changed to Travunija. The present name dates back to the XVI century. As the entire Balkan region, and Trebinje had various masters and they all left traces in architecture and in the culture and customs; and you will be here to welcome churches, cathedrals and mosques, and the Old Town with walls from the Ottoman period. Then established Public buildings, administrative buildings, barracks, schools, roads and, today, the memory of the narrow gauge railway and Ciro from the Austro-Hungarian period. All this is set based on the Greek and Roman culture, which was preserved during Nemanjića and Company Kotromanića.

Air in Trebinje is typically Mediterranean with a mean annual temperature of 14.2 ° C and 270 sunny days a year. The climate of this region is characterized by specific vegetation (fig, pomegranate, olive, citrus, vines, herbs ), as well as a specific way of life characteristic of the Mediterranean.

One of the largest underground river in Europe, Trebišnjica, flows through the city. Its length is about 98 km from underground flows 187 km. The waters of the river meet the criteria of water courses and classes. One of the attractions on the river Trebišnjica jumps from a bridge that is held every summer in the period July – August.

The most beautiful view of the city with five bridges are provided with picnic Crkvina where there is a temple of the Holy Virgin in which there are the remains of the poet and diplomat John Dučića. Apart from the temple, which is an exact copy of the Gracanica monastery in Kosovo (many call it Herzegovinian Gracanica), as part of the complex is the bell tower, gallery, parish hall, amphitheater, a fountain, a small church bookstore and a summer garden.

Trebinje is Museum of Herzegovina, located in the old town in the Austrian army barracks at the end of the nineteenth century.
